Sunsreach Peak

The highest peak of the western Gwyventooth Mountain range is called Sunsreach by the alpine dwarves. The Gwyventooth mountains are so named as they are said to be the lower jaw of the primordial drake Gwyven. In a battle with the gods, her jaw was ripped off and fell to Taluma, her teeth becoming the mountain peaks. Sunsreach is in the position of her left fang, rising above the other peaks like a cuspid tooth.

Sunsreach is the site of pilgrimages by dwarves who try to reach the peak as it is the closest they can get to the sun which they worship as the celestial manifestation of the element of fire. Due to its height alone it is one of the most difficult climbs, and dwarves who attempt it do so with as little gear as they can to prove their worthiness. Those that make the climb are given the title Soltouched.

Emult Merrymountain is famous for making a pilgrimage to Sunsreach every year for 50 years and counting

But, why is touching the sun so important to the dwarves? Read on to find out.

Dwarves and the Sun’s element of Fire

Dwarves, who are rifafolk along with the elves, honor the elements of fire and earth. The sun of Taluma and it’s element of fire are ruled by Sol, the Fire-King, whom the dwarves worship as a patron due to their connection with his element. Fire is important to most societies but especially dwarves. Fire is important to the dwarves primarily due to its use at the forge, allowing them of course to smith weapons and armor, but also all the other metalwork used in their society. It also heats their hold via the hearths, lights the dark, and cooks their food.

Sol, who the dwarves call Blazebeard, is one of the four Caelestine, the gods of the four elements and the celestial body that manifests that element who include the dwarves other idol Earth-Queen Eosta and the elven patrons Air-King Stel and Water-Queen Luna. Each of the four Caelestine have dominion over many realms related to their element. Sol’s mineral is metal, his plants are herbs, his time is Noon, his beasts are reptiles, and his storm aspect is lightning.
