The Orc People

Only recently have they gained respect and acceptance among the main civilizations of the world. They are still considered brutish and intimidating - their physical appearance being unhelpful in overcoming this perception. They stand head and shoulders above men at a minimum of 6 feet tall, easily towering over 7 feet, with a heavy bone structure and body mass making them average 250 pounds or heavier. Their complexion is most commonly green, from light to so dark it is almost black, though some are known to have shades of brown or gray skin. Their eyes can be brown, gray or green, and there are rare orcs with red eyes. Their hair is black or brown, though they often dye their hair with strips of color. They have small pointed ears and tusk-like lower canines.

For much of Taluman history, the people known as orcs were considered adversaries of all the Triune races: humans, dwarves, and elves. Having the blood of demons flowing in your veins, not to mention outward demonic appearances, has made it hard to instill trustworthiness. They have most often been in competition for territory with dwarves in the mountains, and if humans are honest they have more conflict with their own kind than with orcs.

Orcs traditionally live nomadic lifestyles, migrating with the seasons like animals - often following animal or beast migrations. They are hunter-gatherers with a deep, spiritual, respect for the land which is a philosophical reason for them to not build permanent structures or farm fields which they think scar the landscape. Their treks take them to places that seem perilous to other people such as the highest of mountains, across the widest deserts, and on the waves of the largest seas and oceans. Historically they have lived in tents and yurts made of beast skins, though recently they have begun to inhabit buildings in human-centric communities as part of integration with them. Their lack of permanent settlements is part of why others have considered them primitive in the past. They do have a few strongholds for crafts that need a permanent location such as smithies for forging weapons and armor. These are often in natural caves and are secret and highly protected.

Orcs eat a diet of primarily meat, though they will forage for wild fruits and greens. They are the only people known to not only be able to stomach - but actually prefer - the meat of monsters and creatures. Their demonic natures make them able to consume the magical and ‘corrupt’ flesh of supernatural beasts. If the people of the Triune had a better understanding, they would see that the orcs actually helped them by hunting many dangerous beasts and clearing areas before they ever came to them to settle in less wild environs.Having to keep on the move, their main preparations involve preserving meat like salting and drying. They also subsist on berries and tree fruits, nuts, fungi, roots, and other wild growing plants.

Orcs are tenacious people able to withstand extremes of temperature. Their clothing is mostly protective and is made primarily of leather, with some wool. They do not farm or herd to obtain cloth materials and they only get as much wool as the fur from beasts they hunt, so they do not have ongoing sources of wool such as from domesticated herds. Their armor is mostly leather as well, though they do have smiths among them and they pillage metal armor pieces and weapons from others. When among other people they will add more clothing in a style similar to the culture they assimilate into. As they typically have to carry all their belongings on them, they have many bags and sacks and with them many belts and straps. Every orc carries on them a weapon, or as they picture them - hunting and defensive implements. Though they can grow full heads of hair, male orcs often shave their head bald, or at least a large portion of it in hairstyles like mohawks while female orcs grow their hair long and braid it - often with undercut or shaven sections like their male counterparts. Males grow beards but no mustaches.

Being nomadic, having permanent facilities for crafting goods is not common, so trading is their primary source of wealth. Animal products - especially rare monster ones - are a major source of trade and income. This includes leather goods but also furs, horns, and bones. Taxidermy trophies from exotic beasts and monsters are worth their weight in gold. In their travels they also come across natural resources that are coveted by others who are unable to travel where they are located including precious gems, rocks, wood and more. In return for their trade items, anything metal is the most highly regarded of trade goods to orcs. In reality, orcs are exceptional traders and most of their wares are obtained in deals, not by force. Their frightening appearances make people think that they would have killed to get their goods, and they have not tended to discourage this idea which gives them the upper hand in negotiations since their trade partners never know if they might become a victim instead if they are not amenable and fair.

Orcs, who are opposed to settling and subservience, are averse to domesticating any animals. They may ride some beasts - though horses are notoriously suspicious of them - and have animal companions, but they do not ‘tame’ animals. Though they follow herds in their migrations and hunt small numbers of them, they do not domesticate and herd any beasts. They can establish connections with dire or fiendish beasts versus natural ones such as dire wolves, and hellhounds and nightmares.

Orcs are not thought of as spiritual people, or if they are it is in an ‘evil’ sense, by humans and the other civilized people. But they are deeply spiritual, honoring nature: the land and beasts. They primarily worship Gwyven: the mother of all beasts whose very blood flows through them via the demons they are descended from, but as people who live in and traverse all environs, they also honor the Calaestine via their storm manifestation as well as the Luminaeries who are the avatars of day and night to them. And yes, there are some who directly worship Sezsezkya. This further adds to the perception of orcs as innately evil beings, though to them Sezsezkya is an avatar of wildness and the antithesis of the constraining order of civilization.

Roaming throngs of orcs are bound to run into other people. Though they try to avoid large communities, they can encounter other civilized people who are traveling. When the intimidating, dangerous looking orcs are seen hunting what may be considered property of a civilized territory it has been a natural, if unexcused, reaction to see them as invading or otherwise threatening forces. There has been a historical tendency to overreact to the presence of a throng of orcs and thus escalation has been swift. Orcs are accustomed to this response and are prepared to defend themselves, furthering the appearance of them as an attacking force. Usually, this has meant that encounters between humans, dwarves, and elves with orcs have had little chance to be resolved diplomatically. Since the Orcstrife, the people of the Triune have gained a better respect - and understanding - of the ways of the orcs and accept their nomadic ways and are less likely to react aggressively to the presence of an orc throng. When defending themselves, or when they are the aggressor, orcs are formidable opponents as they are skilled with their weapons which are used both for hunting and combat, and they are experienced with fighting monsters and other creatures more dangerous than other mortals and using strategy and positioning to direct wild herds into traps. Their cunning is equal to their physical might.
